Joint Press Release - 02 December 2006

BBPG, BBEG & BBI Candidate reply to Cllr Raymond Singleton-McGuire

We write in response to the letter to the Editor from Cllr Raymond Singleton-McGuire in the local press on 29 November 2006.

We are simply not going to repeat again and again our responses to the same old sorry tale. Our fellow Bostonians can clearly see what is happening here. The only one fact that Cllr Singleton-McGuire needs to understand is that the Boston & District Bypass Pressure Group (BBPG), the Boston Bypass & Economic Growth Pressure Group (BBEG) and the Boston Bypass Independent Party (BBIP) have all been formed over time for a reason.

What does he think that reason is? It is certainly not because the Borough Council is doing such a good job, is it?

Protest March 05 Dec 2004
FLASHBACK: Protest March outside Boston Borough Council which took place on 05 Dec 2004.

We understand that some of the candidates for the Boston Borough elections attended a seminar for Independent Councillors at Lincolnshire County Council offices on Friday, so it is not without surprise to us that you are now using one or two "spin" words in your letter, for example "a few of us" when referring to the pressure groups. Martin Hill used the term "a very small number of people" in his letter to the press on 15 November 2006! That's an insult to the 81% of people who are supporting the Boston bypass campaign.

Our groups have indeed been working together and are gaining momentum as the campaign strengthens on a national platform, in time for next May's Borough Council elections.

Like the majority of our fellow Bostonians, we don't have the luxury of piloting our own private aircraft, so have to sit in the congestion on John Adams Way on a daily basis instead.

Public Comments
The written comments made by the public at the recent Public Consultation in July 2006 held by Lincolnshire County Council include:
"Traffic wise Boston is a snarled up mess. It takes ages to get from A to B, adding to pollution problems. A proper bypass is required to re-route all of the through traffic (especially coastal traffic and lorries)."
"Bypass Boston now before the town dies."
"It is significant that the case for a Bypass has been so poorly presented in this document. Most of the measures detailed are mere temporary palliatives."
"A bypass has been muted for the past 50 years and shelved each time. Experience with other towns, villages and cities a bypass is the only answer and a must. What is wrong with our local councillors and county councillors for this area, do they not force the issue, other places elsewhere in the country seem to successfully."
